Scar Removal for Patients with Keloid and Acne Scarring

Patients can suffer from scarring long after an injury has occurred or a skin disorder has subsided. Scar removal techniques are now highly advanced and can help patients to recover a smooth natural look for the area of scarring.

Types of Scarring

The three most common types of scars are keloid, atrophic and hypertrophic. Keloid scars include raised areas that are normally reddish-purple in color and extend beyond the area of the original injury to the skin. Also, keloid scars tend to spread over time. Atrophic scars typically appear like pockets in the skin and are due to skin disorders, such as acne. Hypertrophic scars include raised pink areas that normally stay within the area of the initial wound to the skin and may fade over time.

Laser scar removal works in several ways. In some cases, the laser is used to destroy the outer layers of scar tissue and over time and several treatments, the scar tissue is removed and natural skin grows over the scar area. Lasers are also used to target inner layers of skin to spur natural collagen growth so that the immune system eventually removes the scar tissue and skin grows over the treated area.

Laser Treatments for Scar Removal

Local anesthesia is normally used before the treatment and the laser treatment time may range from a few to 90 minutes. The skin care specialist will recommend the use of mild soap after the treatment and then the application of a mild antibiotic ointment or cream. A non-stick bandage may also be recommended.

Cost for Laser Scar Removal

The cost of laser scar removal includes the facilities fees, anesthesia fees and the doctor fees. In some cases, the scar removal procedure may be covered by insurance, but when the procedure is used for purely aesthetic reasons, there is no coverage.
