Blepharoplasty Surgeons Who Perform Eyelid Surgery

Patients looking to improve appearance of their upper and/or lower eyelids often visit a skilled facial plastic or oculoplastic surgeon. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) specialists are experts in helping patients to eliminate obvious signs of aging around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty can remedy a number of aesthetic concerns, including crow's feet, puffiness under the eyes, sagging eyelids and loose skin, as well as ptosis. Ptosis is a medical condition caused by poor muscle tone or severe nerve damage that can lead to droopy eyelids and, in extreme cases, block vision.

Eyelid surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis at the surgeon's office or a local hospital. During eyelid surgery, cosmetic surgery specialists make small incisions along the natural folds of the eyelids and/or the inside of the lower lids and extract skin and fatty tissue that may have formed over time. The incisions are carefully closed with tiny stitches or surgical tape.

Eyelid surgery may last from two to several hours depending on the complexity of the procedure and how much skin, fat and/or muscle is being removed. Patients are generally free to leave a few hours following surgery and return on a regular basis for monitoring and/or any follow up care. Total recovery time may last several weeks with patients recuperating at home for at least seven to ten days. During the recovery period patients are prescribed antibiotics to avoid infection and topical eye ointment to prevent dryness and ease discomfort.

Scarring generally fades within six months following eyelid surgery and patients are advised to use sunscreen and sunglasses during this time to avoid any sun damage to the area.

Blepharoplasty is a delicate procedure and, therefore, it is essential that it is performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic procedures of the face.

A number of patients who undergo eyelid surgery consider additional aesthetic plastic surgery procedures in order to improve the overall harmony of their face. The most common cosmetic procedures, often performed hand-in-hand with blepharoplasty, include rhinoplasty, facelift, chin augmentation and/or browlift surgery.
