Male Breast Reduction Surgery Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia, or breast enlargement in males, occurs as a result of swelling of the breast tissue, which can be caused by a number of factors. This condition is often caused by an imbalance of the estrogen and testosterone hormones. The disease often affects young males who are in puberty or older men who are experiencing changes in hormonal levels. Gynecomastia treatment can help to restore self-confidence in males who are embarrassed by their enlarged breast tissue.
In fact, changes in hormonal levels can occur at any age during a man's life and can be caused by a number of conditions, disorders and/or illnesses. Conditions such as drug and alcohol abuse, kidney and/or liver failure, certain types of tumors and a number of similar illnesses can lead to hormonal imbalance, thus gynecomastia. In most cases, the cause of the hormonal imbalance is never found. It is important to know that gynecomastia, unlike male breast cancer, which could be mistaken for breast enlargement, often affects both breasts. In some cases, fatty breast tissue and breast abscesses can also be mistaken for gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia can be a temporary condition. Although, male breast enlargement is not a serious medical condition, it can cause mild to severe pain and often leads to embarrassment and insecurities.
The most common symptoms of gynecomastia include: swollen breasts, tenderness, pain and in some cases nipple discharge. Men experiencing these symptoms should contact their doctor who will administer a number of tests to diagnose gynecomastia, including x-rays of the chest, physical exam, blood test, mammogram and/or a biopsy. Gynecomastia can be treated with medications that balance hormone levels, but most men with permanent gynecomastia choose to undergo male breast reduction surgery with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Breast removal surgery, also known as mastectomy, or breast reduction in conjunction with liposuction is often the best and the most time efficient solution to gynecomastia. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions either around the nipple or the underarm area and removes the excess tissue and fat. Male breast reduction surgery is a common cosmetic procedure and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. The surgery may last from one to several hours and the recovery period may last several weeks, but most patients resume their daily activities within a few days following the procedure.
Gynecomastia treatment is not often covered by health insurance carriers, however, many plastic surgeons offer a number of different payment plans to cover male breast reduction surgery cost. Patients who wish to learn more about this procedure should contact a highly skilled plastic surgeon.
Gynecomastia is often performed in conjunction with liposuction and/or tummy tuck, which are quite trendy cosmetic surgery procedures among men who may be overweight.
