About the Labiaplasty Procedure
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and/or shape of the inner or outer lips of the vagina. The inner lip is also known as labia minora, which is the inner flap of skin that covers the vagina. The outer lip, called labia majora, is the external flap of the skin of the vagina.
Women undergo vaginoplasty with a skilled plastic surgeon for a number of reasons, often to enhance the appearance of the vagina, to reduce genital discomfort or enhance sexual satisfaction. In fact, enlargement of labia minora or labia majora is common among women and can be caused by many factors, including sexual intercourse, childbirth, genetics or aging. In some cases, the lips of the vagina are extremely elongated and/or asymmetrical, and can cause self-esteem issues and physical pain during certain activities.
During the procedure, a board-certified plastic surgeon first administers local anesthesia to help prevent any pain and/or discomfort. Next, the surgeon excises and/or shortens the labia minora and/or the labia majora using a number of special surgical tools. In some cases, the surgeon may use a liposuction device, called a cannula, to eliminate excess fat in the labia majora. Finally, the surgeon then sutures any incisions.
Labiaplasty can last anywhere from two to four hours depending on the complexity level and aesthetic goals. Recovery may last several weeks and common side effects include, bruising, swelling, tenderness and some bleeding. Women who undergo labiaplasty will be asked to limit activity and sexual intercourse for at least four weeks. Prescription pain killers, as well as antibiotics are often prescribed to labiaplasty patients following the procedure.
Labiaplasty is considered to be a cosmetic procedure and is, therefore, not covered by medical insurance. There are a number of risks associated with labiaplasty, including infection, bleeding, temporary numbness, pain, excess scar tissue and hematoma.
However, most labiaplasty procedures are quite successful and have helped a number of women achieve a more rejuvenated, aesthetically pleasing genital area. In fact, many labiaplasty patients choose to undergo additional vagina rejuvenation procedures at the same time, including hoodectomy, vagina tightening, revirginization, laser perineoplasty, vulvar lipoplasty and G-spot amplification.
A large majority of women, who undergo labiaplasty, often wish to go through additional aesthetic plastic surgery enhancements, including procedures for the chest area. This is why breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are some of the most frequently performed procedures by plastic surgeons specialists. A number of new procedures are also available for body contouring, including butt lift and abdominal etching.
